Bursa Malaysia ends lower

KUALA LUMPUR: The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) settled lower today on lack of catalysts and in line with most regional markets.

At 5pm, the key index stood at 1,673.92, down 2.85 points after fluctuating between 1,671.43 and 1,677.

A dealer said the easier regional markets including Malaysia were due cautious sentiment ahead of the European Central Bank (ECB) policy meeting later today.

Weak sentiment also clouded the regional markets as the US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen hinted at an interest rate hike later this month, added the dealer.

Hong Leong Bank contributed 1.25 points to the index's decline, falling 34 sen to RM12.98.

For other heavyweights, TNB gained two sen to RM13.42, Axiata was flat at RM6.10, Maybank and Petronas Chemicals eased five sen each to RM8.36 and RM6.73 respectively while Public Bank shed two sen to RM18.34.

Among actives, Hubline was flat at one sen, Instacom trimmed 2.5 sen to 28.5 sen, XOX reduced two sen to 21.5 sen and Wintoni slid 1.5 sen to five sen.

In terms of market breadth, decliners outpaced gainers by 525 to 306, while 354 counters were unchanged, 584 untraded and 15 others suspended.

Total volume increased to 2.04 billion shares worth RM1.84 billion from 1.96 billion shares worth RM1.85 billion on Wednesday.

Regionally, Japan's Nikkei 225 was slightly higher by 0.01% to 19,939.90 and Singapore's Straits Times edged up 0.12% to 2,887.24.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng eased 0.28% to 22,417.01 and Jakarta Composite Index inched down 0.19% to 4,537.38

On the scoreboard, the FBM Emas Index shed 28.7 points to 11,632.83, the FBMT100 Index was down 28.03 points to 11,317.34 and the FBM Emas Shariah Index declined 22 points to 12,528.4.

The FBM Ace dipped 101.19 points to 6,440.36 and the FBM 70 weakened 64.19 points to 12,858.33.

Sector-wise, the Industrial Index was 5.4 points higher at 3,292.85, the Finance Index declined 70.58 points to 14,119.68 while the Plantation Index slid 24.67 points to settle at 7,472.53.

Main Market volume was marginally higher at 1.05 billion units worth RM1.64 billion from 1.03 billion units worth RM1.64 billion on Wednesday.

Turnover on the ACE Market rose to 868.02 million shares worth RM178.61 million from 753.69 million shares worth RM181.97 million yesterday.

Warrants declined to 121.24 million units worth RM18.92 million from 174.85 million units worth RM27.86 million on Wednesday.

Consumer products accounted for 109.36 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products (213.90 million), construction (42.86 million), trade and services (457.07 million), technology (2837 million), infrastructure (20.38 million), SPAC (6.70 million), finance (48.37 million), hotels (742,900), properties (107.25 million), plantations (10.51 million), mining (42,000), REITs (4.72 million) and closed/fund (7,000).

The physical price of gold as at 5pm stood at RM137.99 per gramme, down RM2.36 from RM140.35 at 5pm from yesterday. — Bernama
