Musa Hopes 12th WIEF In Jakarta To Focus More On SMEs

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- Chairman of the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) Foundation, Tun Musa Hitam, hopes the 12th WIEF will hold more specific meetings and discussions relating to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as over 90 per cent of the world economy are contributed by them.

Musa said the the three-day 11th WIEF, from Nov 3-5, 2015, has upgraded its focus on the SMEs and will play its role to help them.

"We received requests that the 12th WIEF, which will be held in Jakarta on May 20-22, 2016, to hold conferences specifically on funding for the SMEs, innovations as well as e-commerce," he said.

Musa said this to reporters at the closing ceremony here today.

Meanwhile, WIEF Foundation Secretary-General, Tan Sri Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, said the 11th WIEF was a success against the backdrop of continuing volatility and uncertainty in the global economy, exacerbated by a rapid decline in oil and commodity prices, the currency crises and increased geopolitical insecurity.

"All the leaders have provided useful and important guidance for the planning and conduct of the forum's activities to sustain its continued relevance and impact for the future," he said.

He said the forum welcomed the recommendations to implement a comprehensive global SMEs business match-making network to address the barriers and sustainability challenges faced by the SME community while supporting the growth of SMEs.

The 11th WIEF was attended by 4,113 global leaders, ministers and government representatives, leading corporate figures, businesswomen and young entrepreneurs from 102 countries.

The forum covered topics on Islamic finance, halal industries, women and youth development as well as the creative arts.

It saw the signing of five agreements relating to Islamic finance, halal industry, human capital development and information and communication technology amounting to US$350 million (US$1=RM4.34).

The global annual forum is committed to building bridges through business.

It is the largest international gathering of heads of government, economic experts and stakeholders to share experiences and knowledge about Islamic economy since its launch in 2005.
