LABUAN, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is considering a partnership with the private sector to implement the proposed coastal reclamation project here.
Its deputy minister Datuk Ir Hamim Samuri said the partnership would save costs for the government and resolve the long-standing coastal erosion issue.
"We can consider having the private sector on this project as the cost involves huge funds estimated at more than RM100 million.
"There is a need for the project to be implemented as many landowners have reported to have lost part of their land due to the erosion," he told reporters after a briefing here Tuesday.
He said the project would also pave the way for various developments including the oil and gas sector and housing for the people.
"We were made to understand that due to limited land here, many oil and gas warehouses are squatting outside of the industrial zone. The ministry is aware that Environmental Impact Assessment approval has not been obtained," he said.
Meanwhile, Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli said there was an urgent need for a well-organised industrial zone to cater to the needs of oil and gas players.
